Back to Basics Brain: My Three Month Food Intolerance Journey and What’s Next
For the past six weeks, I’ve been on a mission to heal from the inside out by removing foods my body simply can’t tolerate — all thanks to a simple blood test from Supply Life. This test helped me pinpoint which foods were causing inflammation, bloating, weight gain, brain fog, and energy dips, making the elimination process straightforward and focused.
Now, as I enter the final month of my three-month elimination period, I’m shifting gears to follow a Keto diet. This isn’t just a fad for me; it’s rooted deeply in what I call the “Back to Basics Brain” concept — a principle I first embraced nearly 10 years ago when I started healing my gut.
A Timeless Approach with Modern Roots
Interestingly, this approach isn’t new. My mother took a similar path back in the late ‘80s, adopting what she called a “few foods diet,” which mirrors the ketosis-style elimination I’m now returning to. The idea of using an elimination diet to improve health actually dates back to 1926 when Albert Rowe first proposed it to address food allergies.
Alongside this, my mother also explored the Feingold Diet, which gained popularity in the 1970s. Developed by Dr. Benjamin Feingold, a paediatrician and allergist from California, this diet was initially designed to help children with allergy symptoms such as hives, asthma, and eczema. What was remarkable was that Dr. Feingold noticed behavioural improvements in his young patients and began using this diet to manage symptoms of ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other behavioural conditions.
Why This Matters Now
I’m revisiting these tried-and-tested methods because of the shifts my body is going through during perimenopause, compounded by the everyday stresses of life and work. It’s a reminder that health is an ongoing journey — sometimes we need to circle back to the fundamentals to regain balance, clarity, and vitality.
Join Me on This Journey
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing my experiences following the Keto phase of my elimination diet, insights I glean, and the ups and downs of navigating this path again. Whether you’re curious about gut health, food intolerances, or brain-boosting diets, I hope my story inspires you to listen closely to your body and embrace what works best for your own well-being.
Here’s to healing, rediscovery, and finding our way back to basics — one mindful bite at a time.
